CASINOS
In St. Vincent and Chamonix (France), there are gambling casinos, but residents of Val
d’Aosta are not allowed to gamble there. The region does not want its own people to lose
their money. It is certainly out of character with the rest of the region, but it is one of the
reasons the region is the richest and most popular for tourism in Italy. There are also spas
( fonte) from natural hot springs located in St. Vincent.
SKI RESORTS
Courmayeur at Mt. Blanc and Cervino (the Italian name for Matterhorn) are the most famous
skiing resorts of the area, but every lateral valley has ski runs and lifts. The resort at Aosta
is Pila and you can reach the tram right ouside Aosta at Gressan and be up there in 20
minutes. The is also a run and lifts at St. Barthelemy, up at the end of our road. In Cogne,
the World Cup Nordic Skiing Championships were held in 1992. The best skiing is from February to March.
SPORTS
Hiking is everywhere. There is a high perimeter trail that circles the whole valley with retreats for overnight. Don’t miss the Roman Bridge at Pondel on the way to Cogne. Check on trails in our library. They play soccer, too. There is a very nice covered swimming pool in Aosta. There are tennis courts in Aosta by the soccer field and open courts around the area. For golfers, there is a course in Val Ferret near Courmayer and an excellent course near Ivrea. Other courses are in Gignod on the road to the Grand St Bernad Pass only 8 km from Aosta; and a beautiful 18 hole course in Biella (info in cupboard).
